An Example Of Google’s Laughable Canonical Domain Management

November 10th, 2005 · No Comments · Google

I just took over a site called Cocktail-Fun.com. It was pretty stale and in need of some clean urls etc etc. I made a few changes, including a 301 redirect from the non-www to www. But Google has got it all wrong. Here’s the setup:

  • cocktail-fun.com 301’s to www.cocktail-fun.com/, and
  • www.cocktail-fun.com/index.php 301’s to www.cocktail-fun.com/

I had thought that by setting up these 301’s Google would be able to figure out that www.cocktail-fun.com/ is the canonical domain, or so I thought. Here’s what Google has:

    • Google is showing the old index page
  • http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=www.cocktail-fun.com&btnG=Search
    • Google is showing the new index page
  • http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=cocktail+fun&btnG=Search
    • Google is showing the new index page - www.cocktail-fun.com/
    • They also happen to show www.cocktail-fun.com/index.php indented below!

Strange to say the least. We’ll see how this pans out over the coming weeks. Maybe once they properly spider the site and get all the 301’s it will sort itself out. :)
